The Catawissa Military Band
Assistant Director, Rick Wolfgang
Son of late Ralph E. Wolfgang, Ralph Jr. better known as
"Rick" graduated in 1963 as the first class in the then new Southern
Area High School playing French horn, cornet, and piano. Rick graduated 4
years later from Temple University and taught in inner-city schools while
finishing his Master's Degree in Music Education. He moved to Eugene,
Oregon for the next 25 years where he taught in the public schools, founded and
conducted the Eugene Junior Orchestra, a chapter of the New Horizon's Band,
completed his doctorate at the University of Oregon, performed in the Eugene
Symphony Orchestra, and Eugene Symphonic Band, and as instructor
in Music Education at the University of Oregon, made several presentations for
local and national MENC conventions.
After a minor but life-changing heart attack and
bi-pass surgery, he and his wife Karen decided to explore the world while
teaching. They both taught, through the American School Systems, in
London, England, Quito, Ecuador, and retired in 2004 after a two-year stint in
Athens, Greece.
Rick and Karen moved back to Potter County,
Pennsylvania in 2006 to be closer to Rick's parents. Rick enjoys playing
trombone in the CMB and always carries his conducting baton for assisting in the
conducting of the same band in which his father conducted or performed for 60
years.
